When the aspirations of clients are excluded, or the human spirit’s creativity is overlooked, projects often fail. Although prominent architects tried to anticipate human activity, their designs were based on scientific principles. However, architecture is much more than that. It involves the human spirit, creativity, and the desire for space and meaningful experiences—elements that are unpredictable and deeply human.
Who Should Design the City?
When asked who should design the city, the answer is not solely the architect, the urban planner, or the politicians. Everyone has the right to design the place where they live. Designing is a fundamental human right.
The Radiant City: A Lesson in Architecture
Le Corbusier’s Radiant City faced challenges due to its disregard for the human spirit and its disconnection from urban environments. The uniform, monotonous design, excessive focus on automobiles, and exclusionary tendencies led to difficulties. While the concept influenced urban planning, it did not achieve widespread success. The displacement and destruction of neighborhoods caused social disruption, loss of community, and distress.
